My son falls into the category of MSPI. I followed a very strict elimination diet until he reached approximately 9 months. In conjunction with our pediatrician's recommendations, I began to reintroduce beef, soy, and finally dairy products into my diet. My son remained asymptomatic . . . and i was thrilled! He is now rounding 12 months and so i proceeded to introduce dairy directly. A small percentage of cow milk mixed with his typical breastmilk bottle. He immediately vomited. Have any of you experienced MSPI past 12 months? If so, what did you choose to transition to?

This is not my recipe, but wanted to share:

1c quinoa flour
1/2c tapioca flour
3T oil (I use olive)
1/2c apple juice concentrate, thawed

*combine flours in bowl, mix oil and juice together and stir
them into the flour, knead to absorb all flour and form a very
hard dough. Roll to 3/8" on floured board, cut into 1x3 inch
bars (I sloppily curve the edges bc they get sharp), transfer to
lightly oiled baking sheet, bake at 300 for 35-40mins or until
begin browning, turn off oven and leave for an hr to
harden-makes about 1 1/2 dozen

I'm told by my friend that these are significantly less messy
than the store bought ones and last longer too. Nate loves them.
I keep them in a ziploc in the freezer, which is even better bc
then they're cold.

Andrea,

My son also has MSPI and we only on occasion see a little bit of blood in his stools.

Most doctors just diagnose by trial and error.. .if they take the baby off of milk/soy and they improve, then they have an intolerance.

I found this site where this mom had a test done on the lining of the intestines that showed there was an intolerance:

http://library.adoption.com/ar.....ctive.html

So the answer is yes, there is a way to test, but most of the time doctors will just tell you to try a different formula or TED.

I've wondered about my daughter being intolerant of milk, and possibly soy, but until recently, I never saw blood in her stool. This changed on Saturday and today is the third day I've seen some. I saw her pediatrician today (before the third diaper) and she told me that I should only be worried if it continues for several days. So my question is should I immediately suspect an intolerance or wait it out a few more days as per my pediatrician's advice? Is there a definite way of knowing if a baby has an MSPI?

thanks!

A milkintolerance reader sent us the following email:

I'm a mom of an MSPI kid who just turned one. We're beginning reintroduction of dairy, and I wonder how other people have monitored their child's poops following reintroduction — just a visual inspection, or did you do guaiac cards (tests where you smear a sample on a card to detect trace amounts of blood)? Just curious how in-depth others have gone to monitor the reintroduction phase.

I've never heard of guaiac cards. We always did very careful visual inspections of our

childrens' diapers. We made sure to have good lighting, and we poke around in the stool, by rubbing the diaper together to spread apart mucous streaks.

What about other readers out there? How did you handle food reintroductions?
